Special Educational Needs

At Meadow View Academy we are proud of being an inclusive school which focuses on the well-being and progress of every child. We have high expectations of all our children, including those with Special Educational Needs or a Disability (SEND).

To ensure our children achieve their full potential, and are equipped with the life-skills needed in the next step of their journey, we engage a range of strategies to issue challenge at an appropriate level, and provide support to overcome barriers to learning. We understand the importance of making reasonable adjustments and personalisation of provision and building a picture based on the whole child. Putting the child at the heart of everything we do we encourage all learners to Dream big, Believe in themselves and Achieve their goals.

We are constantly striving to build a strong culture of school, family, community and services working together.

At Meadow View Academy we encourage our children to Dream big, Believe in themselves and Achieve their goals. Through providing a diverse enriched curriculum, children strive to be the best they can be, creating a community that nurtures kindness and compassion. Building their knowledge and experiences of the world, children leave Meadow View prepared for the challenges of the future. We celebrate our differences for we are all unique, however, together we are a masterpiece.

What do our parents think?

“I am totally happy with the SEN process at school and feel I have been kept in the loop at all times."

“Keep up the good work! I feel we have a great parent/ teacher relationship and work together as a team to help ***’s needs. Thank you!”

“With the support from SENCO, class teacher and LSA I feel we have all worked together to help my child through his selective mutism and his growing confidence in talking at school. Thank you for your support, guidance and understanding around my child’s needs.”

"Thank you for all your time, care and effort into helping *** and making her excel and enjoy school. I’m eternally grateful.”

Our Sensory Room

At Meadow View Academy we recognise that some of our children may need support with their physical and sensory needs, as well as emotional regulation.

We are lucky to have our fabulous sensory room, which provides children with a space to complete activities to support their Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.

We asked our fabulous children what they thought of the sensory space:

"I like the cushions because then I can show everybody my feelings." - Year 2 pupil

"I like the Inside Out pictures because if I'm upset I can look at them. I like going in the tent and the bean bags." - Year 5 pupil

"I like the lights, because they make me feel calm. I like the blue ones." - Year 6 pupil

Other provision within school

Lego Therapy

Lego Therapy is a social group that develops positive interaction, social competence and problem solving skills.

The group of three children each have a role; engineer (picture of a completed Lego design), supplier (the box of Lego pieces) and a builder (to listen and create the Lego design using questioning skills.)

They all have a vital part to play in working together to design the final masterpiece.

Friendship Terrace

Friendship Terrace is a programme containing ten stories to help children learn about friendship skills.

The programme enable the group to recognise the character’s friendship blocker and looking at ways that these barriers can be overcome with a ‘friendship builder.’

Outdoor Learning Group

Our Outdoor Learning groups focus on promoting turn taking, team work and listening skills whilst the children participate in creative, practical activities.

Sharing the successes of the group provides a fantastic opportunity to develop communication and raise self-esteem.

Drawing and Talking

Drawing and Talking is a therapeutic intervention which has the focus of enabling children to discover and communicate emotions through a non-directed approach. Drawing and Talking takes place over twelve weeks and enables children to use their imagination to draw whilst the practitioner uses non-intrusive questions. The desired outcome is to support children to process feelings or trauma.
