Important Information

At our Nursery, we provide a nurturing, stimulating, and engaging environment where children feel safe, happy, and excited to learn. Through play-based learning and carefully planned activities, we support children’s development across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Our aim is to build confidence, independence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Communication, Language and Literacy

Developing strong communication skills is a key focus in Nursery. We encourage children to listen carefully, follow instructions, and express their thoughts and ideas. Through stories, songs, rhymes, and conversations, children build their vocabulary and confidence in speaking. Adults model language and support children in extending their sentences and engaging in meaningful discussions.

In Nursery, our phonics sessions focus on developing the children’s language skills by providing a language rich environment and encouraging them to use new words and phrases. This half term, our Phonics sessions initially focus on being able to hear and identify sounds around us, in the environment. These vital skills help to prepare children to learn the letter sounds later on.

The children will be learning to play and interact with the adults and the other children at nursery by using back and forth conversations.

We also use the Squiggle While You Wiggle programme to support early writing development. This fun and active approach combines large physical movements with music to help children develop the muscles needed for writing. Children make big movements using ribbons, scarves, and crayons before moving on to smaller mark-making activities. This helps children develop coordination, control, and confidence when beginning to write.

Maths

Children develop early mathematical skills through practical and engaging activities. We explore numbers through counting songs, games, and hands-on experiences. Our focus during this half term will be to identify colours and take part in matching and sorting activities.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We support children in developing positive relationships with adults and their peers. Children learn to share, take turns, express their feelings, and develop confidence in their abilities. Through group activities, circle times, and play, we help children build independence and resilience while learning to understand and respect others.

Expressive Arts and Design

Creativity is encouraged through a wide range of activities including painting, drawing, role play, music, and construction. Children are given opportunities to explore different materials and express their ideas through art and imaginative play. Singing songs, dancing, and using musical instruments also form an important part of our creative learning.

Outdoor Learning

Our outdoor area is an important extension of the classroom. Children have daily access to the outdoor environment where they can explore, investigate, and develop their physical skills. The outdoor space includes opportunities for climbing, balancing, riding bikes, building, digging, and imaginative play.

Outdoor learning also supports exploration of nature and seasonal changes, allowing children to observe the weather, plants, and wildlife throughout the year.

Understanding the World

Children explore the world around them through hands-on experiences and discussions. In Nursery, we learn about the seasons, noticing changes in the weather and the environment throughout the year. Children explore nature, observe plants and animals, and learn about different celebrations and traditions.

This half term in Nursery, our topic is called ‘All About Me!’ The children will have the opportunity to talk about themselves and their families. We will be focusing on how we change as babies, toddlers and children and we will discuss these changes with the children. Are we the same? What has changed?
